103

That's the magic number for books read this year. Friends are coming over tonight and staying through the new year, so no more books this year, but I'm satisfied with that number.

room set revisited

Coworker messaged me from Tokyo to let me know that he bought me a set of my favorite fleecy pajamas that aren't sold here!

productive without pants

Making end of year donations on my computer in bed makes me feel like a useful member of society without requiring that I put on pants.

once then twice

We had wilted salad with hot bacon dressing and fondue with bread and potatoes last night, as well as smoked meat and various cheeses, and s'mores. Lots of yummy leftovers today, including potatoes fried in the bacon fat. Good thing I only fried up half of the potatoes, or I would have eaten all of them!

nick of time

I was super late with my Christmas shopping this year, and was relieved when my Amazon order arrived a few hours before my sister's family came over for dinner last night, so that I had time to wrap the kids' stuff.

child-friendly

Having a dog who doesn't mind kids (especially little girls who are obsessed with him) certainly makes it easier to get together with my sister's family.

smoke and fire

Smoked Chateaubriand for Christmas Eve dinner in front of a cozy fire while watching Lord of the Rings with sleeping dogs.

catching up

We're pretty much caught up on TiVo, and most shows are on break, which means that we can watch all the other stuff that we've been wanting to get around to online, like Silicon Valley and The Knick. And if we tap those out, then we can watch season two of Battlestar Galactica on DVD. I usually envy children all their free time, but I pity their limited screen time.

Tuesday, December 23, 2014

twelve

Getting ready to turn off my work email and chat for the next twelve days, so that I'll only get emergency calls (or maybe none at all).

wire time

End of the year, and two last minute deals miraculously made it through drafting, negotiations, approvals, and signatures in time for me to still take the rest of the year off.

Sunday, December 21, 2014

sleeping in

That thing when your boyfriend let's your dog out to pee while you're still sleeping, and your dog decides to poop, too, so you don't have to get up and walk him for a long time.

lazy bear

Made it up to the city to try a new restaurant with a couple friends from work. Boyfriend and I have resolved to find more food friends and eat out or cook with them more regularly, so it's not always just the two of us. We're on our way!

do it again

If the salad is delicious and easy the first time, chances are that it's delicious and easy the second time.

Friday, December 19, 2014

leftover heaven

Leftover persimmon guts go great in a vinaigrette. Throw that on some leftover arugula, feta, and steak, and there's dinner in five minutes on a rainy Friday.

Thursday, December 18, 2014

love is

Love is having a Statler to your Waldorf, who will spend an hour taking about the person that annoys you both.

Thursday, December 11, 2014

surprise steak

Thought I was having leftover chili for dinner, but Boyfriend bought steak!

Tuesday, December 9, 2014

brush with fame

My dog had a cameo in an internal video, and is now a minor celebrity. He hasn't let it get to his head, and greets his favorite people with the same uncensored joy as ever.

be back soon

Such a great trip, despite the cold and rain. Lots of food, friends, a few hours of cards, a Jodie Foster sighting, and productive work time. Can't wait to do it again in a few months.

nye

Friends booked tickets to come visit over New Year's!

noodles with friends

Post-work ramen, perfect for winter!

hands up

New York really comes together in tough times. 9/11 was a bonding moment for all New Yorkers, and walking through the streets in the aftermath of the Eric Garner grand jury decision was like that: a sad time, with both protesters and drivers and passersby and people in windows all coming together. New York puts the heart in heartbreak.

Wednesday, December 3, 2014

heart

I walked to work, walked to dinner (tapas with a college friend), walked back to my hotel. I miss this place.

Also, the food in the work cafes is better here.

Also, talked to one of my teams a bit more, and starting to convince them that we're on the same side.

Tuesday, December 2, 2014

back

It feels so good to be in New York. How I missed this city.

Doesn't hurt that my hotel is adorable and less than one block from the office, in painful contrast to the commuting ordeal of the Bay Area.

Also doesn't hurt that I had lunch with an old friend and went to dinner with two coworkers at a two star restaurant, including an amazingly delicious crostini with uni and lardo melting on top.

at peace

Almost eight months after my sudden (but probably belated) decision to change groups at work, I think I'm finally at peace with my choice. Giving up "what if" and friends can be so hard, but I think that I made the right choice for my own sanity.

Friday, November 28, 2014

my black friday

Slept in, ate some breakfast, migrated to the couch with dog, electric blanket, and book, then fell into a series of naps. Took a little break from all that sloth to walk the dog, do some dishes and laundry, and can now resume couching with a pretense of productivity.

thanksgiven

Family, friends, food, wine, YouTube videos... same thing we do every Thanksgiving, and it's always great. Also, traffic was like butter both ways.

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

giving thanks

Thanksgiving is like Christmas for adults. I used to think Christmas was the best holiday, but now I prefer Thanksgiving.

On a more serious note, current events in Ferguson have made me thankful for things I'd never thought about before.

efficient

I am not a regular errand person, but when I do them, it is satisfying to map them and plot out the timing so that everything is as efficient as possible (bonus points if I can do three or more and predict when I'll get home within a ten minute window), with more enjoyable errands mixed in with the annoying ones.

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

every time

New pedicure is always better than old pedicure. One day, I will master this lesson .

it's electric

Electric blanket on the couch = my dog and I never want to stop watching TV.

Monday, November 24, 2014

winging or winning

Unexpected presentation last week went well enough that my big boss complimented me on doing so well without having to rely on slides.

Saturday, November 22, 2014

over the counter

That moment when the Sudafed starts working. The only thing that will be better will be when I don't need it anymore.

so much fun

Old friends, photo album, old stories, dinners out, comedy club, aquarium, chocolate chip pancakes!

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

short week

My friend is coming tomorrow (yay!), we're hanging out with another college friend on Thursday (yay!!), and I'm taking Friday off to spend the day together (yay!!!).

Monday, November 17, 2014

spontaneous lunch

Grabbed lunch with one of my favorite engineers after she pinged me this morning. We tried a new-ish cafe, and it was delicious. That's a good start to the week.

Sunday, November 16, 2014

cold weather hot stone

Winter is here (Californian winter, anyways), so it's time to fire up the oven for homemade pizza!

unboxing experience

Boyfriend is sick, and has been cooped up at home all weekend. On the plus side, he spent some of his pent up energy unpacking the boxes in the guest room, which now looks more like a room, and as a result we have more pillowcases.

treasure everywhere

Boyfriend found a box of Thin Mints that got stashed in a closet when we were tidying up at some point.

Friday, November 14, 2014

replacements

My old sleep mask was falling apart. The new one reminded me why I like them so much.

Thursday, November 13, 2014

drive by

Surprise drop in visit from a couple colleagues that I don't actually work with brightened my day.

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

gummy jackpot

Swiss friend brought over seven kilos of gummies, and then we went out for lobster rolls. That's as good as it gets on a Wednesday night!

slight reprieve

Tomorrow's 6:30 a.m. call has been moved to 7 a.m. Both are very early, but that 30 minutes makes a big difference, at least mentally.

Monday, November 10, 2014

coming soon

Old college friend, one of the funniest people I know, just scheduled a trip to visit next week!

Tuesday, November 4, 2014

time to eat

Upcoming trip to New York means lots of coordinating schedules and comparing restaurant reviews in order to maximize both the number of friends seen and good food eaten.

permission to stray

Coworker mentioning that he wants to get a dog = excuse for me to look at dog rescue sites without feeling like I'm cheating on my dog. Not that I really needed an excuse.

dog's life

Getting ready for work just means eating breakfast and peeing on a tree. Work just means sunbathing, wrestling with another dog, and getting various humans who come over to pet and compliment you. Coming home is just an opportunity to practice howling with the neighborhood dogs (and your human). If I am very good, maybe I'll be reincarnated as a dog.

Sunday, November 2, 2014

another star

Went to Chez TJ for anniversary dinner last night, and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Really good, interesting restaurants are hard to come by in the Valley, so it's exciting to add another one to the list.

sunday agenda

Wake up. Fall back asleep. Eat candy. Fall back asleep. Read. Cuddle dog. Nap with dog. Eat cheese and crackers. Continue nap with dog.

So much to do, so little time.

Friday, October 31, 2014

equalizer

Rain on the way to work means: (1) less drought, (2) my dirty car gets a free car wash, and (3) everyone else's clean cars get a little dirty.

happy halloween

Thursday, October 30, 2014

other gummies

My Swiss gummy candy obsession has become so well known that one of my coworkers brought in another locally available type to try. I love candy and random kindness, so random candy kindness rocks!

surprise fruit

Persimmons from our tree are surprisingly sweet and delicious.

hot tots

Haven't had tater tots in years. They're pretty delicious fresh out of the fryer.

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

giving is receiving

Sometimes it's good to offer unexpected support, because it reminds you of what it's like to receive it. It feeds your heart in either direction.

school night

Went to dinner off campus yesterday ON A SCHOOL NIGHT. Should do that more often. Toothpick was a bit of a puzzle at a pizza restaurant.

six

Six years as of yesterday! Fiver was the only thing that has ever stayed constant in my daily adult life for longer than that. Flower delivery at work, more celebrations to come this weekend.

meeting is exceeding

Expectations can be so high, so when a book starts good, stays good, and ends good, the very act of meeting expectations can be the same thing as exceeding expectations. Well done, Ms. Pessl.

Friday, October 24, 2014

oh the possibilities

When you're only 2% into a new book, and it looks like it's going to be different and interesting and engaging.

Monday, October 20, 2014

happy monday

First two things that happened when I got into work today: the coworker who had been dogsitting Henry for the weekend brought him to my desk, and the coworker who was in Zurich brought me almost eight pounds of gummy candy. Happy Monday!

Sunday, October 19, 2014

improves with age

Reheated Cornish pasty even more delicious than original Cornish pasty.

yelp win

In the middle of Arizona for a wedding, and we went to a Cornish pasty place recommended by Yelp. Delicious and cheap, with really nice people working there. Before the internet and GPS, we probably would have been stuck with a cheeseburger from a drive through. Technology is pretty amazing.

Friday, October 17, 2014

recent revelation

Sleeping with all of my hair pulled up in an awful topknot results in better sleep and better hair the next day.

crispy chewy juicy

Pan-fried dumplings never get old.

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

o.m.gummies

Coworker who is visiting the Zurich office apparently picked up a ton of gummy candy from my favorite store for me. Hooray for candy mules!

credit is due

Went to a lunchtime session about copyright law and music, and it was very interesting. Surprise bonus: CLE credit. And Henry groaning loudly enough for the whole room to hear.

favorite food truck

My favorite food truck was at work today, so I took a break from the "salad at lunch" duet I've been on for the last couple weeks to indulge in some delicious roast pork with crispy skin. The only thing better than food from your favorite food truck is when that food truck is serving perfect pork at work for free and you've been eating salad for weeks.

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

weight watcher

Went to the vet today, and he said Henry is the perfect weight. I'm very good at weight management, if it's someone else's weight!

Monday, September 29, 2014

winter is coming

The one upside to fall and winter is that they make bed an even cozier place to be in the morning.

tiger mom

One of my coworkers recently said that Henry is the best-trained dog he's ever seen (he was watching while I made Henry do a trick for each piece of kibble in his dinner). I was so proud.

Another coworker wanted her puppy to meet Henry because people had told her what a good dog he is, but that didn't go quite as well, since Henry's Achilles heel is big dogs that he doesn't know. So I guess I'm proud of his reputation, but still working on execution.

Saturday, September 27, 2014

one last drop

There is such a strange satisfaction to finding ways to get every single bit of something out of its container: toothpaste, face wash, moisturizer. Finished off several things in the last week, so that satisfaction was multiplied.

Thursday, September 25, 2014

microkitchen obsession

Can't stop eating Noosa yogurts.

crenn

Went to Atelier Crenn for Boyfriend's belated birthday last weekend, and it is now one of our top few local restaurants.

new york city

Most of my clients are in New York these days, so my manager told me to start visiting them regularly. I miss New York, so this is great news.

finally rain

I generally prefer sunny days, but this drought has been so severe that I was excited to wake up and hear rain falling on the roof for the first time in months.

Sunday, September 14, 2014

city girl

Made it up to the city twice in one weekend: once for my awesome brother-in-law's birthday, and once to catch up with law school friends. Good time both evenings, and Henry even did well being left home alone for longer than usual last night and playing with a much larger dog tonight. Busy but fun weekend.

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

less guilt

Since adopting Henry at a shelter over a year ago, I've checked the shelter website almost every week, mostly to see if the runner-up dog (the dog that I almost picked instead of Henry) was still there. He was there every week, his picture looking at me as if to say, "I would have liked to leave the shelter, too." I always felt a little bit guilty, but couldn't stop checking. But this week, Austin's photo is no longer there! I'm hoping this means that someone couldn't resist his charm, and he's off to a brand-new life that's even better than the one he would have had with me.

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

kindness reminder

Ran into a coworker today who is one of the nicest people I've ever met (he once tracked down the guy who had stolen his cell phone and instead of calling the cops on him, tried to befriend him and set him on a better path). I feel like I'm doing pretty well when I'm hoping for the best in people but preparing for the worst, but he reminds me that there are people who hope for the best and then try to make it happen.

unexpectedly delicious

A slice of bread toasted with cheddar, a couple slices of leftover roast pork from lunch, and some tomato chutney from Paris. Thought it would be decent, but it was delicious.

Saturday, September 6, 2014

howling lessons

Henry trying to howl is so funny that it motivated me to upload my first YouTube video ever.

butter salt artichoke

Yum.

new addiction

Picked up a Korean card game on our trip (the friend who was getting married was from a long-standing cards night from my New York days), and have spent many hours since then playing. I miss a good card game.

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

what a trip

Caught up with a friend in Seattle, went to a wedding in Korea, wandered around Seoul with friends, ate everything from red bean shaved ice to tiny spicy crabs to real Korean barbeque, and even crossed into the North Korean side of the neutral room in Panmunjom. Much more awesome than I expected, and the most "foreign" feeling foreign country I've visited in a while.

Friday, August 22, 2014

countdown

It's Friday AND I'm getting ready for vacation! Super busy week with lots of stress, but it's going to be worth it.

On my way out of the office, a coworker I don't know well stopped me with a question. I was momentarily concerned that it was some kind of legal emergency, but she wanted to know my skincare regimen because she thinks I have good skin. Unexpected compliment beats a Friday afternoon emergency by a long shot!

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

winning

Got a few nights of having the bed to myself and keeping my own hours, then Boyfriend came back, and I had the best sleep I've had in weeks.

Sunday, August 17, 2014

lazy or not

I was a total bum yesterday, sleeping in and then alternating between napping and reading in bed until 4. It was amazing.

Today was the opposite, and it was also amazing. Did laundry and dishes, made brownies to welcome a new coworker tomorrow, took care of Henry's teeth and nails, started a little bit of packing for Korea, went to the office, unpacked and set up Henry's new dog gate, plowed through a fair chunk of work and personal email, worked on two drafts and presos, made a silly frame for a ridiculous certificate from the Bar, and took Henry on a long walk.

Friday, August 15, 2014

cheese plus bread

The simple deliciousness of cheddar cheese on a slice of bread, toasted, can withstand decades of palate changes.

Friday, August 8, 2014

best case scenario

Work picnic with my former team: I got to catch up with everyone without the stress of dealing with any legal issues. I miss them, so it was good to see everyone, get some sun, eat some fresh tacos and ice cream... Happy Friday!

Wednesday, August 6, 2014

new new new

New pedicure (I can wear sandals without shame), and new work computer (it's so much smaller that my computer bag feels empty).

separate agendas

Henry sometimes has his own agenda, which is often more entertaining than the one we had planned. Tonight was a good case in point.

Humans: Let's sit and watch TV.
Henry: I'm going to madly lick your feet.

Humans: Let's get ready for bed.
Henry: Chase me! Look at my fox squeaky toy! Mine! Mine!

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

bird

Went to see Andrew Bird with Boyfriend and two friends over the weekend. It was a beautiful night at an outdoor venue, and we had a really sweet parking spot that got us out and home way faster than expected.

hbd

Happy birthday to me! Took the day off, slept in, bought a few things at Nordstrom, got a surprise flower delivery from Boyfriend, took a nap, and had chocolate chip pancakes and a Pimm's cup for dinner. Real dinner coming up later this week.

Monday, August 4, 2014

go shorty

Taking tomorrow off for my birthday! No plans, just a random Tuesday with my work email turned off, maybe a pedicure if I feel motivated...

free and clear

Several years into my allergy shots, and it still continues to amaze me when I'm able to breathe easily through both nostrils at the same time. It took decades for me to find out that people live like this.

Saturday, August 2, 2014

saved for later

In case I ever need a laugh, I should think about the time Boyfriend had a mouth suck in his ear, or the time a bird pooped all over the inside of his car, even though the window was only cracked open.

Friday, August 1, 2014

five stars

Based on all of the desperate sniffing and whining and the frantic high-fiving and rolling over, I'm guessing that the new brand of dog biscuits is amazing.

Thursday, July 31, 2014

mystery blooms

In the middle of a drought, with no sprinklers and 90 degree days, these leafless flowers have mysteriously burst into bloom in our scraggly yard.

Monday, July 28, 2014

sunday night

Another week coming up fast, mitigated by silly YouTube videos, a crazy bedtime romp with a hyper dog, and the news that we've booked first class tickets to Japan for cherry blossom season next year.

Saturday, July 26, 2014

utilization of space

Heat wave + no air conditioning = actually putting the (cooler) basement living room to use.

happiness

Happiness is a smiling dog who has no idea how ridiculous he looks when he's smiling.

Thursday, July 24, 2014

seating

Moving desks again to a window seat in a smaller cube adjacent to Henry's favorite playmate. Also getting a new chair to go with my new motorized adjustable desk.

refreshing

Just found out that I'm overdue for a new computer under our corporate device refresh policy. The new computer will be less than half the weight of the current one. Technology is amazing. Also, I love our walk-in tech support and ergo support.

the other morning

The other morning, I woke up about two hours before I was supposed to get up, fell back asleep, had a long dream, then woke up convinced that I would have to get up. When I checked the clock, only 20 minutes had passed. This happened a few times in a row, so it almost felt like I'd slept several more hours.

early bird

Unfortunately, I had to get up early this morning for a 7 a.m. call, but on the plus side, there was almost no traffic as I drove in, and breakfast was in full swing, so I grabbed a hot bowl of Cream of Wheat with blueberries, butter, and brown sugar, and a blueberry-fresh mint smoothie (I always forget that mint makes everything more delicious.)

Sunday, July 20, 2014

admission against interest

When Boyfriend was out of the house this weekend, I may have foregone my usual literary pursuits in favor of guilty binging on chick flicks. Canned warm fuzzies are predictable but still warm and fuzzy.

done

Finally finished a letdown of a book that I picked up a couple weeks ago, and I'm excited to move on to a better one.

Also, after a catastrophic canine overeating event, Henry is back on his normal eating and pooping schedule. Whew.

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

tomato season

Two windfall heirloom tomatoes from a coworker's garden + ingredients scavenged from our fridge and pantry = two rather delicious dinners. Tomato bruschetta (with bagel slices instead of baguette), and tomatoes and pluots with mint and feta. Simple, quick, and delicious.

Saturday, July 12, 2014

where i belong

First day in weeks that I could sleep in and stay in bed until an absurd hour. It's noon and I'm still in bed, just on principle. I even ran some errands using Google Shopping Express, getting more vacuum bags, replacement light bulbs, and other things that are essential but not worth getting up for.

Monday, July 7, 2014

what's for dinner

Didn't feel like making dinner or picking it up from a cafe at work. Remembered that my mom sent me home with several containers of home cooking yesterday.

Sunday, July 6, 2014

right now

I'll get back to all the hanging out, eating, and wandering around I did on the trip in another post, but right now, the important thing is that after over eighteen hours of travel, plus a pit stop at my parents' for dinner (and to pick up the most excited dog ever), I am home, the laundry is running, my work bag is packed for tomorrow, I'm flopped on my own bed, and the rest of the unpacking and resettling can wait till later.

On a related note, I've finally decided what I want to be when I grow up: a very happy dog. I don't think there could be anything better.

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

pimm's

Is there anything as refreshing as a Pimm's cup on a summer day in London?

Monday, June 23, 2014

food with friends

Got to catch up with some friends over dinner the first night I got in. This is a bowl of liquefied parmesan ravioli with smoked lard. Add some good friends, and you can't go wrong.

business trip

I'm both glad I never had to do any business travel in the first eleven years of my career and glad that, now I've started, it's somewhere awesome. London, it's been a while, and I hear rumors of Marrakech next year...

Wednesday, June 18, 2014

forget me not

Every year, I kind of forget about apricots until apricot season rolls around and they show up in the fruit baskets at work, and then I remember how delicious they are.

Tuesday, June 17, 2014

note to self

New pedicure looks so much better than old pedicure.

Monday, June 16, 2014

korea it is

We'd been planning a dive trip in August, but an old friend is getting married in Korea around then, so... We're going to Korea!

giddy

Nothing makes me feel quite so giddy and hysterical as when Henry decides that my feet and toes need a thorough cleaning, and that he's the one to do it.

Friday, June 13, 2014

canine hygiene

Full toothbrushing, tartar scraping, nail clipping and grinding, and ear cleaning feels so productive.

morning meetings

I'm not a morning person, but morning meetings are much easier if they're over the phone, so that I can dial in from home, wear pajamas, and have a sleepy face, and the only thing I need to work on is my voice.

Thursday, June 12, 2014

stock up

I have this little clutch from Target that I once got for like $15, and it just fits a phone, lip gloss, money, and cards. Every time I use it, I get compliments. Every. Single. Time. Who knew such a random thing would be the best thing I ever bought, if we're going based on compliments alone? But they didn't sell them for a few years after that. I saw a different color in the store today, then looked online, and they had five versions! I bought a bunch, so that I have extras for myself and to give as gifts in a pinch.

slog

Successfully forced myself to do a bunch of unappealing things this week: online traffic school (my first ticket), bank, pharmacy, fingerprinting (for a background check), and tons of awful paperwork (the joys of being a lawyer practicing in a different state than where I was admitted). Such a relief.

Wednesday, June 11, 2014

roll over

Henry learned how to roll over in two days. One of us must be really good at dog training.

vegan

I love meat and junk food so much that it's a pleasant surprise when I come across a healthy vegan dish that tastes just as good. Making vegan chili using the recipe from the cafe at work, hope it turns out like theirs.

new management

Had my first 1:1 with my new manager today, and things are looking really promising. High probability of interesting work, with a lovely dose of breathing room first.

Sunday, June 1, 2014

seven in nine

Finished the whole Harry Potter series in nine days. Lots of fun to read it all at once, and not bad time-wise, considering that it included a four day work week.

dreaming again

It seems that with the decrease in stress, my weird dreams and odd sleep talking have returned, much to our amusement. Combat ice dancing, anyone?

Sleep barking dog.

no brass rings

I grew up in a tiger parent household, always trying to get the best grades, win all the competitions, get into the best schools, all to set myself up for the best life. Once I left home for college, however, I started having doubts about what "the best life" really meant. My classmates all wanted to get consulting or investment banking jobs, but the jobs sounded awful to me. Without much sense of what it was I really wanted to do, I went to law school, and continued to avoid the competition for the best grade, the most exclusive clerkship, the job at the most hardcore firm. I ended up at a firm after graduation, but quickly realized that it just wasn't right for me, and that the brass ring that everyone chased after at the firm -- partnership -- was just like the brass rings people had chased in college and law school. It was something that people wanted because they were supposed to want it, and I just didn't. I left to go to Switzerland, where I worked for an NGO no one had ever heard of, spending 40 hours a week working on something I thought mattered and made a difference in people's lives. It was great. After doing that for a few years, I moved back to the States, taking another non-standard job that was very exciting for me (but still different from what my classmates were doing). I was very happy, I worked on a lot of different things, and after a few years, I eagerly transitioned over to supporting our research group, where all of the ideas are weird and crazy, and some of them are potentially brilliant.

I was extremely happy, and I proudly told myself that this was the result of making conscious decisions to ignore the brass rings that everyone else wanted, and just do things that I wanted to do. I loved it.

Over two years passed, and I was drowning. Boyfriend and I both worked in the same group and it got so busy that we rarely made it home before dark, and struggled to keep our vacation days from maxing out. I had vicious headaches and constant heartburn. I started dreaming about work. My personality started changing, and I started disliking myself. But I had the coolest job! I knew it, having done it for two years, and everyone else always told me it was the coolest job. If you have the coolest job, all other jobs are less cool, and you don't leave the coolest job for something less cool, even if you're waking up in the middle of the night, not sure if it was the nightmare or the heartburn that woke you up.

And I finally realized that even though I was doing something off the beaten path, something that none of my classmates (with whom I refused to compete) were doing, and even though I started doing it because I loved it, I had somehow turned my job into some kind of brass ring, and despite all of my conscious efforts to avoid chasing brass rings, I was holding one and refusing to let it go, even though it was making me do all the things I had always scornfully said I wouldn't do: giving up my personal life for work, letting my work change my personality, making me cry in frustration at my desk after everyone had left or in the bathroom if people were still around.

When I finally admitted that to myself and reminded myself that I don't do brass rings, I screwed up my courage and changed to something closer to where my heart is: international work and non-profits, with the added bonus of having a personal life outside of work. It was an incredibly hard decision to make (this particular brass ring was much harder to turn my back on than the others in the past, and most of my coworkers seem surprised by the change), but I'm already starting to see improvements. I get home earlier. I have vacations planned. I'm nicer to myself and to others.

So this was a big lesson for me. I don't do brass rings, they are really bad for me, and I've always known that. What I didn't know until now is that not all brass rings are readily apparent, and that makes them hard to identify and avoid. Once you have a brass ring, it is really hard to give it up, but for me, if I'm not loving it, giving it up is the right thing to do.

pottering along

Two days in, 3.3 books down. Work will slow me down this week, but maybe I can get through the whole series in nine days? It's good to have fun goals.

wwii in color

The History Channel aired a 10-part documentary about WWII with lots of astonishing original footage that was shot in color. I told TiVo to record it on a whim, although I usually prefer to read about the war than watch documentaries (which are so often quite dry and suck all the humanity out of it), but this series is totally engrossing.

what to do

Long weekend, and managed to get a bunch of things done during the week, including lots of booking details for the upcoming trip. What to do now? Start reading Harry Potter from the very beginning.

7/8

As of tomorrow, I'll have taken seven out of the past eight Fridays off work. I could get used to this, but I'm going to cut myself off in June before the charm turns into an addiction. It has been an amazing sanity booster and a good lesson on unplugging and realizing that work is important, but boundaries are important, too.

the long goodbye

I sent my goodbye email to one of my teams yesterday. It was bittersweet, because I've worked so closely with them and really got to know some of them well. It's a little hard to let go, even as I breathe a huge sigh of relief over this first step towards my current future of choice.

today i learned

My dog apparently had never seen a balloon before today, and I guess if you've never seen one before, it could be a terrifying surprise?

yawn

Here's to taking Friday off, turning off work email, staying home, reading on the couch, then taking a three hour nap with the dog.

contrast

Cold feet (mine), warm thighs (his). Bliss (mine), torment (his).

google shopping express

Free same day delivery means that I can have all the maple bacon chips I want, whenever I want, without leaving the house. Nom.

pop

When you pop a zit that didn't seem ready, and it delivers beyond expectations.

business or pleasure

Both! Going to London in June for work, then spending a long weekend there catching up with my all-time favorite travel buddy. Can't wait.

Saturday, April 26, 2014

oh deer

Deer hang out at our house frequently (it was the first thing that charmed me when we came to see it, and they regularly graze in our yard or block our driveway), but I still get excited every time I see them.

tis the season

Artichokes were 99¢ each at the store the other day.

end of tunnel

Things might start getting better in a little less than two weeks. In order to keep hanging in there as long as possible and use up some vacation days, I've been taking sanity days, and there really is something amazing about random three day weekends with no email, no goals, and no activities.

overdue

Got my first real haircut since June! I usually manage to get in every 4-5 months, which is already pushing it, but 10 was way too long.

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

chef

I believe I have figured out how to make the perfect bacon mac and grilled cheese sandwich. It is probably as unhealthy as it sounds, but that's half of the appeal.

rediscovered

Surprise taste of my childhood! My manager is from Philly, and brought these to a meeting today. I haven't had them in years, and they are still totally yummy.

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

taxes

Paying them really doesn't bother me, and getting them done is always satisfying, so it's a net positive for me, despite the financial impact.

import

Friend in Switzerland sent me two more bars of surprise chocolate. They always seem to arrive when I need them most.

it gets better

Made it home before 9 almost every night this week! And it's going to get better pretty soon, I think.

wild and crazy

I did two social things on weeknights last week: trivia night and a birthday dinner with a coworker. I can't remember the last time I did that, and it felt kind of crazy.

small world

Went to birthday drinks for Boyfriend's friend yesterday, and ran into a college acquaintance I haven't seen in fourteen years, bringing back fun memories of South America.

framed

Finally borrowed a truck a brought back two framed pieces from the shop (and some outdoor furniture, too).

gimme a break

Sometimes a breakdown can lead to a breakthrough. I might have a good option that didn't seem possible before.

productive

Ordered furniture (after five months of putting it off, and even negotiated a discount), dropped Henry off for a bath, bought some dog toys and a couple things at REI, dropped by the library to renew my card and make a donation, picked up some stuff at Safeway (where one of the florists gave me a rose just to be nice), got a facial, bought a ton of frozen dumplings, picked up Henry, and got home in time to go to dinner with friends, followed by some YouTube video swapping.

Friday, March 28, 2014

important research

Took the day off from work, stayed home, didn't do anything special. Except for researching break dancing and beatboxing competitions. And then Boyfriend came home and we went out for soup dumplings.

meet the parents

Sometimes in my weekly calls to my parents, I get little hints into their lives outside of being parents. This week, for example, I found out about some of my dad's political career maneuvers, all hidden behind his hardworking Asian exterior.

forage

Some rice and quinoa, leftover asparagus, scraps of my mom's roast pork, and eggs laid by a coworker's chickens, all thrown together in one pot = enough fried rice for three meals.

oldest friend

Quick phone call yesterday with my oldest friend. We live very different lives now, but have so much old history together that it's still so good to catch up and hear her voice and remember everything from our third grade play to senior prom.

cavalry

New hires gradually coming up to speed, outside counsel coming on board, could there be a dim light at the end of this long tunnel?

international travel plans

Might get to visit a couple international offices to do some fun training stuff, which is a good thing, because my attempts to plan travel for personal purposes are not progressing so well.

new tricks

New things that I'm pretty sure my dog has down pat: up, off

He's also pretty good with: poop (in retrospect, I wish I had picked a command that wasn't so clear in its meaning, as I now have to march around saying "Poop! Poop!"

And his earliest commands are pretty well established now: sit, down, shake, high five, come, and potty

summer is coming

Daylight Saving Time in a few days...

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

quick visit

College friends dropped by for dinner last night. We've known each other almost nineteen years! Several good things established: I love watching dog people play with my dog; fancy chocolate mochi are delicious; at least one pair of my friends is as committed as I am to life sans enfants.

the cat's away

Most of the product team was on a ski trip yesterday and today. Almost no meetings, quality time with my inbox, and an afternoon with coworkers, getting pedicures and drinks. Also, two days in a row of getting home at a normal time!

Sunday, March 2, 2014

housekeeping

Finally got the bedroom shutters installed, and took a couple pieces in for framing. Once we order some beds, this might start looking like a place where people actually live.

special delivery

My mom dropped by on Friday with flowers and food to try to help with the headaches. Headache still persists, but at least I've been eating real meals.

Friday, February 28, 2014

seamstress

Successfully altered Henry's new fleece jacket to fit his weirdly proportioned body.

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

happy puppy

Henry played with another office dog for an hour this morning, was happy and playful for the rest of the day, and is now content and sleepy.

rereading

When everything else is stressful, I can at least ensure that my reading life is comforting by rereading old favorites.

crazy idea

I've been in a bit of a frantic rut lately (if that makes sense), and two days ago, I had a random, crazy idea. Some of my best decisions in the past (getting a dog, moving to Switzerland) started off as random, crazy ideas, so I'll see if this one leads to good things, as well.

team building

Helped plan a team event the other week. My two presos went well, but more importantly, the activity I picked was pretty awesome. Nothing quite like getting locked in a room with a bunch of weird puzzles to solve.

Sunday, February 9, 2014

cheese

After much scrambling and weather, we managed to get the family to my house yesterday for a photo session. My mom was so happy she almost cried. The brownie points were probably worth the money and hassle.

good idea

I was wondering what I'd eat for dinner tonight after feeling terrible for days (I hate persistent headaches), and a coworker who lives in the neighborhood emailed to say she can come by later, as her daughter is selling Girl Scout cookies. Sounds about right.

therapy

That moment when a bunch of smart people admit that no one knows what they're doing is such a relief. It wasn't just me.

credit

Google Now told me last night that my mom's flight today was already delayed (she forwards us her flight confirmations, and the flight info shows up my phone). I called to tell her, and now she thinks I'm extremely thoughtful for tracking her flight status and giving her an extra hour to sleep.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

back to work

No more long weekend, but I showed up to work to find flowers on my desk from one team, then plowed through a ton of stuff for two other teams.

down time

Took advantage of Boyfriend's weakened state over the weekend to plow through a Teen Mom 2 marathon. Addictive and unhealthy, and embarrassing to admit. Didn't stop us.

good monday

Surprise visit from out of town friends in Monday (a holiday) justified a lobster roll outing.

Friday, January 17, 2014

good friday

Working from home in my pajamas, friend dropping by later, three day weekend coming up.

Thursday, January 16, 2014

good thursday

Boyfriend home from three nights in the hospital, project announcement went smoothly so far, and I'm not that stressed. I'm going to count this as a win.

just kidding

Convinced a lot of people I was pregnant with a picture taken after one of our big dinners in Tokyo. I'm still getting confused congratulations. Highlight of my year so far.

visitor

Annual visit from an old friend who lives in London happened last night.

care package

Last thing I did before leaving work late on Friday was pick up a care package from the mail room. Jaffa cakes, chocolate, and gummy candy + Friday night = good end to the week.

Friday, January 10, 2014

room set

The only thing better than coming home from work and changing into my pajamas is coming home from work on a Friday and changing into my super comfortable Japanese pajamas, strangely named "room set."

happy new year

Happy, indeed. The last couple weeks had lots of frabjousness:

  • A last-minute failed test and successful resuscitation of a cranky old underwater camera strobe, just in time to take it on the trip
  • A three-star meal at Sushi Mizutani in Tokyo: uni that made us forget why we don't usually like uni, needlefish, otoro to make your mouth weep
  • Another three-star meal at Ryu Gin, also in Tokyo: resident owls in the waiting room, an introduction to cod milt, perfectly cooked mackerel that tasted nothing like mackerel, a tangerine dessert that was the love-child of pop rocks, sherbet, and pie
  • Two nights at the Four Seasons in Tokyo, which may be the best hotel ever (lovely rooms, excellent staff, and they even bring you and your 150+ pounds of dive gear and luggage to the train platform)
  • Baffling but funny ads on the train
  • Two nights at the Ritz, where we could watch the sun set behind Mount Fuji
  • Reunion meals with my host sister from Japan, a law school friend, and a friend from my Zurich days
  • Hot ginger ale in a can from a vending machine, both strange and delicious
  • A reprieve from winter, complete with swimsuits, flip flops, and sunscreen
  • 20 dives in Palau, where we reveled in being in the water again (has it really been over two years?), saw mantas on our first dive, lost count of the sharks, and saw the strangest crabs on our night dive
  • Stars in the sky, phosphorescent plankton in the water
  • A hilarious Christmas Eve with the other guests, including attempts to translate joked from English to Chinese to Japanese and back, an impromptu sumo contest, and experimental drinks made with sriracha
  • One of the oddest people we've ever met, and will remember forever through a series of catchphrases
  • Not a single episode of puking, despite taking minimal Dramamine and going on the boat every day
  • Zero email access for over ten days
  • Island puppies who loved to lick the salt water from our dive gear
  • Lots of reading (twelve books in eighteen days), bringing my year-end tally to 114
  • Upon returning, a dog completely overwhelmed with joy and excitement, and parents who have decided that they love this new dog
  • A couple of light work days, to ease back into the idea without too much strain, then a weekend to forget about it again
